Dice Roller and Bingo Machine: two party tools for a phone or a projector, no app required

Two of the simplest pages on Omikuji Tools are a Dice Roller and a Bingo Machine. Both are for the moment when the physical thing is missing (the dice went under the sofa, nobody brought a bingo cage) and a phone or a meeting-room screen is already there.

Dice Roller: three 3D dice with the total shown above

Dice Roller

Choose from one to six dice and press Roll (or Space / Enter). The dice are real 3D cubes drawn with CSS transforms and tumble for a moment before they land; the total and each face are shown above them, and the last 12 rolls stay in a history list. The rolling sound is synthesized in the browser, and a toggle turns it off for quiet rooms. There is a full-screen button for when the whole table needs to see it. Uses on the page: board games and sugoroku, TRPGs, turn order in a classroom, settling who does which chore.

Bingo Machine

Press Start (or Space / Enter) and the ball flickers through the numbers still in play; press again to stop it, or it stops by itself after five seconds. The default range is 1 to 75, like standard bingo, and the maximum can be set anywhere from 5 to 999. Numbers are drawn from the ones not yet called, so nothing repeats, and a board shows every number with the called ones marked. The draw history is saved in your browser, so an accidental reload in the middle of a party does not lose the game. Full-screen mode makes the number big enough for a projector.

Getting the randomness right

A common shortcut for shuffling in JavaScript, sorting with a random comparator, gives biased results. A code audit of the whole tools site found that none of the lotteries use it: draws pick uniformly from what is left, and shuffles use Fisher–Yates.

Features

  • Dice: 1–6 dice, 3D animation, automatic sum, history of 12 rolls, sound toggle, full screen
  • Bingo: adjustable maximum (5–999), no repeats, board view, history kept across reloads, full screen
  • Keyboard: Space / Enter to roll or draw
  • Nothing is sent to a server; no sign-up
